Black Awareness recalls the sound of New York City in the early '80's that could be heard through out the loft jazz scene. Musicians began reviving the freer, posthard-bop sound of Blue Note's second wave of music somewhat to the left of what was considered mainstream. Vibist Khan Jamal was in the center of this era and his latest CD conjurs up images from the past as well as the sounds of that time with much gusto. The date consists of four of Khan Jamal's tunes whcih bring to mind some of Bobby Hutcherson's recordings. Jamal's solo style though is more akin to Milt Jackson with his heavier touch and strong rhythimic accents. Three of Grachan Moncur III's tunes are also on this memorable CD.
